INSIGHTS
By  Father Pat

They were driving along at a steady pace. Even though the speed limit was 30 mph, the late model SUV, with Sam Papalagouras at the wheel, was moving at a rate nearly twice the posted rate speeding along the country road. Suddenly and without warning a traffic light, obscured by full leafed trees, appeared around the curve. It was red; a warning to stop, but at this rate of speed the driver would never bring the heavy vehicle to a complete stop, so he decided to simply to slow down as much as possible and proceed through the light. "Why bother," he decided. "No one is out this late, and the light should just be flashing, anyway." But, there was someone out that night and this driver was approaching the traffic signal, from a perpendicular direction. From his vantage point, he could see the green hue lighting the sky. The timing was perfect, and soon the sound of rubber tires skidding, molded plastic bending, and metal crunching could be heard by the residents who lived along this seemingly secluded road. Within minutes, the police and the sheriff’s department were on the scene fighting to free the passengers from the twisted wreckage. It was a very fortuitous group, because....

When the police started to unravel the accident, Sam, the driver of the SUV suddenly blurted out, "That light should have been flashing yellow. No one drives this late at night."

And so, here we are... The inheritors of the promise, the newly commissioned, the teachers, the progenitors, the torch-bearers, the newly enlightened, the maintainers of the truth, and we still are prisoners of darkness, despite His ebullient Light. We, like so many, not only maintain, but often insist that rules need not apply to us all of the time, or adjust the rules to fit our purpose. The fact is, we are more prone to rationalize and convince ourselves that there is always room for negotiation or extenuating circumstances, which might apply to others, but never to us. We are professional benders of rules. Unfortunately, like everyday situations, our relationship to God is just as often convoluted and it all too often falls prey to our uninformed or ignorant bias, interpretations and understanding of our Christian heritage and belief.

Despite our protests and personalized application, the basis of our faith and practice are based on: love, peace, forgiveness, prayer, fasting, and a sacramental life. These conditions are not merely suggestions, but our responsibility to adhere to, and to follow. They are not meant for the faint of heart, nor constrained by circumstances applied only when we derive some benefit. We, so often, have trivialized what our commission on earth is really about, because, we are the baptized ones; inheritors of the gift of the seal.. We are the bearers of the Holy Spirit. We are the light not hidden under bushel baskets, secreted behind locked doors, or in false compartments. We are the hearers, sharers, and bearers of the Word. We are the modern followers of the Christ, and like so many who have fallen before us, or who have succumbed to error, we are reminded not to be like Pharisees and/or hypocrites.

We are persistent, however, in our way, and either we apply only the rules, guidelines, and precepts which make our life easier, or adapt them to fit our lifestyle. We do not always take into consideration those around us, nor measure ourselves by God’s standards. Rather, we simplify our needs to be inclusive solely to the "me." Take Sam at a younger age, for instance who prayed to God, but with self-imposed guidelines, rather than with the message of God. He prayed for forgiveness, but when God questioned the young man’s sincerity in requesting forgiveness, the young man.... Well maybe it’s better to share the story.

(Sam reciting the Lord’s prayer). "Our Father Who are in heaven" Yes. "Hello?" "Who is that?" You asked for Me and I am here. "No, I was praying, Our Father Who..." Yes. You wish something from Me? "I am praying the Lord’s prayer." I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. "Oh my. I was just praying. I did not expect a response." Yet I am here. I am always listening and responding. Please continue. "Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread...." And when was the last time you went to church to receive Holy Communion? "Communion? I don’t need to receive Communion. I can just pray here alone in my room, can’t I?" Communion is for the remission of sins. Are you a sinner? "Well, I guess I have had my share. I mean no one is perfect, right?" There is One. "No God, I know Jesus is perfect, but I mean people like me. None of us are perfect. We all make mistakes. Even I do." Then you should attend church and receive Holy Communion. Remember the words to ‘Do this in remembrance of me.’"I remember. I guess I just sort of forgot about it, and I am so busy with homework, and a job, and my parents like to sleep late on Sund..." You mean you like to sleep late on Sunday, because you stay up late Saturday watching Saturday Night Live, playing computer games, and talking to your friends on Facebook. "Sorry about that. You are keeping an eye one me. OK. You caught me." I see everything, but please continue. "...and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those..."
