Congress
and the president have declared September 11 a national day of service and
remembrance to mark the anniversary of the attack on the World Trade Center.
This "day of service" was the idea of David Paine, a public relations
director in California. He sought to prolong the feeling of unity and
selflessness by starting an organization encouraging people to volunteer in
memory of September 11.
A national day of service to promote voluteerism is a fantastic idea. But, there are countless service entities who have made that voluteerism the focus of their membership. Philoptochos is one of those special organizations. This year we celebrate eighty wonderful years of service to our church and to the community-at-large. In many ways, great and small, our women have give, have done and have been there when needed. We will continue to do so, God willing, as long as we have a strong base of women willing to continue the legacy. In honor of the eighty years of service of our Philoptochos Society, we will be holding a special dinner & recognition program celebrating "The Power of Women" on Friday, October 16. Four outstanding women will be recognized for their work and contributions to the community: Margaret Diggs, Dr. Sophia Socaris, Faith Takes, and Benita Zhan. There will be a cocktail hour at 6 p.m. followed by the dinner and program. Proceeds of this evening will benefit the special women’s programs at the Troy YWCA and our local Philoptochos Chapter. The dinner is open to the community-at-large. Please make an effort to attend this evening, not just in recognition of the four honorees of the evening, but in recognition of all our special women, past and present. Please join us for a heart-warming evening.
